Romano reveals Jorginho fee and ‘key factor’ as he confirms Arsenal will sign Chelsea star
Arsenal will sign Chelsea midfielder Jorginho before the transfer deadline with a medical “booked”, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners were pursuing Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for most of the transfer window but it became clear in the last couple of days that Arsenal weren’t going to get a deal over the line.
After two failed bids, Arsenal have now turned their attention to Chelsea midfielder Jorginho with news breaking last night that he had emerged as a possible target.
And Romano brought news on Tuesday morning that Jorginho is now all set to join Arsenal after the two clubs agreed a fee with his medical “booked” in.
Romano wrote on Twitter: “Jorginho to Arsenal, here we go! Deal agreed on £12m fee, Chelsea accept conditions and documents are being prepared #AFC Personal terms agreed, contract until 2024 with option further year. First contact revealed yesterday night — medical booked. Arteta, key factor.”
But the deal has been met with surprise and worry as former Rangers striker Ally McCoist doesn’t think Jorginho has the attributes to play for Arsenal.
McCoist said on talkSPORT: “Not a good move for Arsenal. There is some of that (the fact that I am a Chelsea fan). He’s not mobile or has high enough energy for Arsenal, at this moment in time.
On the possibility of Jorginho being a bench player, McCoist added: “Are you telling me that you are signing from my team, as bench players? Is this what it’s come to?! Wow! Wow! (on the tables turning between Chelsea and Arsenal). Why would you sign him?!
“You have to sign players that would strengthen your team, if you can. I know you want a squad of 18.”
And Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie thinks Jorginho will just be a “stop-gap” for if Partey is injured, while he also touched on a possible deadline-day deal for Caicedo.
Hendrie said: “It’s a bit of a gamble for me, it really is. The Caicedo deal – we were talking outrageous – that has gone ridiculous, I think it might happen, I really do.
“I think that the way they have got to that stage, where they are so close to getting the deal over the line, it wouldn’t surprise me if that does happen.
“But the Jorginho thing, that would just be a stop-gap to fill the boats of Partey, if he is injured.”
