Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has criticised Granit Xhaka after his red card contributed to a poor afternoon for Arsenal against Manchester City.
Arsenal fell to their third straight defeat in the Premier League on Saturday against Man City.
They went two goals down inside the opening 15 minutes before Xhaka was shown a red card.
The sending off came as a result of a dangerous challenge from the midfielder on City defender Joao Cancelo.
“It’s hard to find positives for Arsenal because at times, it’s been disarray. You have to stay on your feet and don’t do anything rash and Granit Xhaka has done that.
“We say in modern football to not leave the floor and he has done that many times in the past. He’s the senior figure on the pitch and when you need someone to have a cool head, he’s gone through him and it’s a sending off.”
Former Man City defender Jolean Lescott added that it was an “erratic” challenge from Xhaka:
“It’s an erratic tackle,” said Lescott. “But the ball is going out for a throw-in, in the middle third, there’s no need to make that tackle in that area. It doesn’t surprise me that he got sent off.”
“The first goal was the most disappointing, we were in control of the game, we took the game exactly where we wanted to,” Arteta said.
“The first action they have, we fail to stop the cross and Gundogan has a free header in the middle of goal. If you want to in this stadium, these are the basics you have to do right.
“The second goal we concede is a clear foul because he punches Calum [Chambers] in the face. Once we conceded after the red card you know what is going to happen.
“It’s a really quick action from [Granit] Xhaka, he tries to get his feet off the ground and the ref decided it was a red card.”
