Arsenal have reportedly emerged as a contender to sign Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who has been linked with Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta is close to bringing in one right-back option in Jurrien Timber. But, it seems he could still look to bring in another this summer.

Frimpong is considered to be one of the most in-demand players in the Bundesliga. So, it would be a major coup if Arsenal got a deal over the line.

Last season, the 22-year-old made 34 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen. In the process, he scored seven goals and made eight assists. Statistically, this makes him one of the best attacking full-backs in Europe.

Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has also described Frimpong as a ‘special’ player in the past. After he received a call-up to the Netherlands World Cup squad, Alonso said: “He deserves this chance to participate in the World Cup.”

“He has a very big impact on our game. He is a very good player, but for me is even a special player.

“It is logical that Louis Van Gaal gives him the chance because he is a difference player.”

With that in mind, it’s no secret to see several top European clubs vying for Frimpong’s signature.

Indeed, as mentioned, Manchester United have been admirers of the Leverkusen star for some time. Also, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also have him on their radar.

But, recent reports suggest that Arsenal could make a move for Frimpong this summer.

This is according to German outlet Bildwho claim Arteta ‘wants’ Frimpong at the Emirates next season.

However, the Dutchman is not the manager’s priority. Indeed, finalising the deal for Declan Rice is most important to Arteta, along with signing Timber.

But, he could look to bring Frimpong in after those two deals are completed. This would give him plenty of quality cover in the right-back position.

Last season, Arsenal had to rely upon Ben White to play in that position, who is traditionally a centre-back. Takehiro Tomiyasu is another option.

But, both Timber and Frimpong would arguably be upgrades on both of those players. So, it will be interesting to see if Arsenal do make a concrete offer for the Leverkusen player.

Bild do not mention how much Arsenal would need to pay to sign Frimpong. But, other reports suggest a bid in the region of £35m could be enough to secure his services.
