Arsenal are reportedly targeting Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai as an alternative to Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.

The Gunners were hoping to sign Aouar during the summer but never managed to agree on a fee.

They’ve now been forced to look at alternatives for the upcoming transfer windows.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, they’ve lined up Red Bull Salzburg’s Szoboszlai as a potential signing.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano says that Arsenal could make a bid either in January or next summer.

The club sees him as a cheaper alternative, as Lyon will hold out for in excess of £50 million for Aouar.

Szoboszlai is viewed as a long term successor to Mesut Ozil as Mikel Arteta’s playmaker. The German is currently out of the squad as Arteta favours other midfielders.

Aged just 20, Szoboszlai has been in electric form so far this campaign.

He’s scored five goals and assisted seven more in his first 10 matches.

Since breaking into the Salzburg first team, he’s scored 22 goals and assisted 31 more in just 71 matches.

That form has seen him become one of the hottest properties in Austria right now. He could become a star in the future given his potential.

He represents Hungary on the international stage and has already played ten times for his country.

It’s unclear right now how much he would cost Arsenal. It could be as little as half of what they would have to pay for Aouar.

The Gunners were apparently close to signing Aouar, but eventually invested their money in midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Ghanaian has had a good start to the campaign since joining for £45 million.

He is expected to start in Arsenal’s Premier League game this weekend. They face Man Utd in a huge game on Sunday at 16:30.
