Lucas Torreira has fractured his right ankle and could face an extended period on the sidelines after he was stretchered off in Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Portsmouth.

Arsenal have not yet set a timescale on Torreira’s return, as they await specialist consultation, but a broken ankle is unlikely to be one that is swiftly recovered from.

Torreira’s injury will be a blow for Mikel Arteta, robbing him of a valuable midfield option ahead of a run of four games in the Premier League and FA Cup in the next couple of weeks.

The 24-year-old departed Fratton Park in a protective boot and crutches having been stretchered out of the first half of the cup tie, after a forceful tackle by James Bolton that was deemed a fair challenge by referee Mike Dean.

“It was a great tackle,” Bolton said after the game. “I timed it really well but it’s never nice to see someone down… I hope he’s okay.”
