Mikel Arteta and Edu had disagreements over the signings of Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar, according to reports in France.

It was widely reported that the midfield duo were Arsenal’s chief transfer targets throughout the summer. The Gunners had been linked with Partey and Aouar for months in the lead up to the window opening.

Despite this, it appeared like they would not get a deal for either man done before the deadline. But Arsenal acted late and activated Partey’s release clause during deadline day.

They got the deal over the line as Partey signed from Atletico Madrid for around £44.5m. The Ghanian international has immediately hit the ground running at the Emirates.

He made his first start for the club in the Europa League last week against Rapid Vienna. Partey’s composure in midfield was the main takeaway from the game as Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1.

The window has closed with Aouar still a Lyon player. The 22-year-old has been a big standout player for the French side in recent seasons, which led to him being linked to Arsenal and others.

Aouar started and scored for Lyon at the weekend as they beat Monaco 4-1 in Ligue 1. It is believed that if Arteta got his way, Aouar would now be an Arsenal player, however.

French outlet L’Equipe have reported that Arteta would have preferred Arsenal to sign Aouar over Partey. But the Gunners’ Technical Director, Edu, favoured signing the Atletico Madrid midfielder.

The report adds that Edu’s choice “obviously had more weight” when the club finalised who to go for.
