Arteta reveals how summer deals at Arsenal didn’t go to plan

Mikel Arteta claims that his summer recruitment at Arsenal didn’t quite go to plan as he weighs up bringing in another goalkeeper in January.

Emiliano Martinez was brilliant when called upon last season as the Gunners benefitted from two top goalkeepers, with Bernd Leno the number one.

However, Martinez left to join Aston Villa in the summer as he eyed regular game time, while Arsenal replaced him with Runar Alex Runarsson from Dijon.

Runarsson has been criticised at times this season, though, with the Iceland international struggling to impress when called upon.

And Arteta admits he will try and improve the goalkeeping department in the January transfer window after running out of time in the summer market.

Arteta told journalists: “There is nothing there yet [regarding Runarsson].

“We are assessing what is going to happen with the three positions, the discussions we had in the summer with Edu and the club were a little bit different to what actually happened because of the transfer window and the situation that developed with Emi at the end of the day.

“We didn’t have much time to do what we really wanted to do and we decided to assess the situation now in this window, which is what we are trying to do, and we will make a decision about how we want to move forward in those three positions in the goalkeeping area.”
