Mikel Arteta and Arsene Wenger have discussed the possibility of the Frenchman returning to Arsenal in an ambassadorial role, the club’s manager has revealed.
Wenger spent 22 years in charge of the Gunners, winning a record seven FA Cups as well as three Premier League titles.
He left the Emirates in 2018 after taking charge of over 1200 matches as the north London club’s manager.
Despite his incredible success at Arsenal, fans were very vocal over the legendary manager leaving the club with the team falling further away from challenging for the Premier League title each season.
Unai Emery replaced the 72-year-old in the summer of 2018, before being sacked in November 2019.
Following the Spaniard’s departure, he was replaced with former Gunners midfielder Arteta, who captained the team under Wenger.
Notably, the Frenchman has not returned to the Emirates since leaving Arsenal at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

However, Arteta is keen to have him “much closer” to the club and believes Wenger would be a “great help” in an ambassadorial role.
“There’s been a communication. I talked to him when we went to see the film and it was incredibly pleasant to see him and chat to him, and hopefully we can bring him close,” the Arsenal boss said on Thursday.
“I think he would have a great time just seeing the environment that he can create around him when he’s around this place because of the respect, admiration and the love that everybody at the club has for what he’s done and as well as for what he represents as a person at this club.”
He added: “I cannot tell you now, but what I can say is that I would like him to be much closer, personally, to me because I think it would be a great help, I think it would be a great help for the club.
“Things take time and I think he has to dictate those timings. What I can say is from my side and I can say, I think, on behalf of everybody is that we would be delighted to have him much closer.”
