Aston Villa have agreed a £20 million deal with Arsenal for Argentinian keeper Emiliano Martinez, according to sources.
Martinez is looking for a transfer away from the Emirates after Bernd Leno returned as the club’s number one.
Leno played in Arsenal’s first game of the season, where they beat Fulham 3-0 away from home.
According to football journalist John Percy, Villa have agreed to pay £20 million for Martinez.
The player is completing a medical at Villa Park this afternoon and could feature in the side’s first game of the season.
Dean Smith’s men will play Sheff Utd at home on Monday 21st September.
Martinez is set to become Villa’s first choice keeper, replacing current options Tom Heaton and Orjan Nyland.
His value dramatically increased towards the end of last season after he impressed while Leno was injured.
Martinez played an important part in Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea and their Community Shield victory over Liverpool.
The 27-year-old had to wait years for a chance in the first team. He’s been loaned out a total of six times while part of the Arsenal setup, including spells at Wolves and Getafe.
But now Martinez could finally be a first team starter in the Prem under Dean Smith.
Villa are currently in the process of preparing for the new campaign. They’ve already improved their attacking options by signing Ollie Watkins from Brentford for £28 million.
Arguably the biggest piece of transfer news for Villa fans is that Jack Grealish looks set to remain at the club. The England international is heavily linked with a move to Man Utd, although it’s failed to materialise during the summer.
Grealish could sign in the future if Villa are relegated from the Prem.
