Aston Villa have completed the signing of Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal for £20 million, according to sources.
The Argentinian keeper signs after the two clubs agreed on a fee yesterday afternoon.
Martinez has moved in search of regular first team opportunities in the Premier League. He’s been replaced at the Emirates by number one Bernd Leno.
According to football journalist Charles Watts, the player completed his move today by agreeing personal terms with Villa.
Martinez is set to rival current keepers Tom Heaton and Orjan Nyland for a starting place at Villa Park this season.
He has a good chance of becoming their first choice after impressing in recent months. The 28-year-old played an important part in Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory Chelsea in August.
He also featured in the Arsenal side that beat Liverpool to win the Community Shield.
Martinez is the latest player to sign for Villa during this transfer window. Ollie Watkins joined recently from Brentford for £28 million, while Matty Cash signed from Notts Forest for £16 million.
Their other piece of business is the addition of Ben Chrisene from Exeter for an undisclosed fee.
Villa could break their transfer fee again in their pursuit of Lyon forward Bertrand Traore. The French side rejected their initial bid of £16 million, forcing Villa to consider a larger sum.
Following their successful summer signings, Villa fans will be hoping the side can improve on their 17th place finish from last season.
The club narrowly avoided the drop by finishing one point ahead of Bournemouth and Watford.
Martinez, just like fellow new signings Watkins and Cash, is expected to feature in Villa’s first game of the season.
They play at home to Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United on Monday 21st September.
Man City were supposed to be their first opponents, but the fixture on Saturday was postponed.
