Aston Villa join race to sign Man Utd star who is currently training away from the first team
Aston Villa are said to be interested in Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar who is currently training away from the first team.
The 23-year-old spent last season out on loan with Sparta Prague, where he featured in 32 matches across all competitions.
Sparta Prague have been interested in bringing the goalkeeper back to the club, but they have not reached an agreement with Man Utd as of yet.
However, following the arrival of Andre Onana, it now seems more likely that Erik ten Hag will sanction a goalkeeping sale or two.
While Sparta Prague hold an interest in the shot-stopper, they will have to fend off Aston Villa who are now interested.
According to Idnes, Aston Villa are ‘interested’ in the goalkeeper. The report also clarifies that Kovar is continuing to ‘train individually’ after he was left out of Erik ten Hag’s pre-season squad.
The goalkeeper is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with the option of a further year in his contract.
Man United are looking for a fee of around €10m to sell Kovar on a permanent basis, although they could sanction another loan deal for the upcoming season.
Kovar clearly enjoyed his time on loan with Sparta Prague as he wrote an emotional statement upon his loan spell ending.
“This day marks the end of my time in Sparta. I am very happy that I could be a part of the biggest club in the Czech Republic and help the team to win the title after a long wait.
“I am grateful for the opportunity I was given to be a part of such a great team and club. With this message I would like to thank everyone at the club. From the club management to the players themselves, coaches and all Sparta employees.
“Even though my tenure only lasted ten months, I already know that I can call this place home and it will always remain in my heart. Although this story ends, the memories will remain forever.
“Lastly, I would like to thank you fans. I will always remember the support I felt from the first match until today. It was a ride none of us will ever forget.”
Man Utd could also be left in a sticky situation with Dean Henderson. The 26-year-old is keen on an exit, but Nottingham Forest have switched their attention to Arsenal’s Matt Turner.
Ten Hag’s squad is slowly taking shape ahead of the upcoming season, but there is still plenty of work to be done.
