Eric Bailly says that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was integral in helping him “progress” earlier in his career.

Bailly has impressed in his debut season in the Premier League after joining Manchester United for £30million last summer.

The Ivory Coast international is still relatively inexperienced as a professional, having played just 60 league games across his spells with Espanyol, Villarreal and United.

It was at Espanyol where the centre-half was given his first opportunity to impress, joining the Spanish club’s youth academy in 2011.

Pochettino was manager of the La Liga side at the time before he departed to join Southampton in 2013, and Bailly speaks very highly of his former mentor.

“Pochettino likes hard-working young people and he helps them through, he assists them and helps them progress,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“Of course I will always be grateful. I saw him when we played Tottenham and we always talk and catch up.”
