Bale-steros? Agent responds to retirement pro golf claim

Gareth Bale’s agent has rubbished claims his client will retire from football after Euro 2020 to become a professional golfer.

Bale will lead Wales at the European Championships after a productive loan season at Tottenham.

The forward scored 11 goals in just ten Premier League starts for Spurs, including a final day brace away at Leicester and Jose Mourinho was frequently criticised for not utilising the talents of the Welshman more often.

He has one year remaining on his lucrative Real Madrid contract but Spanish outlet ABC claim Bale is preparing to quit football at the end of Wales’ Euro 2020 campaign.

The report claims the 31-year-old will hang up his boots and attempt to forge a professional career in golf.

But Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, gave the rumours short shrift in a very brief statement on Wednesday morning.

He told talkSPORT: “Sorry, I don’t speak about rubbish reporting.”

Bale admitted after his two goals at the King Power Stadium that he would wait until after the Euros to reveal what his plans are for next season as doing so before would cause “chaos”.

He said: “I know what I’m doing but it will just cause chaos if I say anything.

“I am not thinking about anything, all I’m concentrating on now is obviously finishing this season off strong.

“We meet up straight away for the Euros and I’m not thinking about anything else other than Wales.”

talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist insisted it would be “incredibly sad” if Bale decided to cut his career short as “he’s too good a player”.

The Rangers legend said: “No, he can’t retire! It can’t happen!

“I understand that he’s financially secure, I get all that side of it. But come on. You’ve got to play for as long as you can.

“You’ve got to love the game. If he doesn’t enjoy it then I suppose that’s different.

“I don’t even want to think about it, he’s too good a player. He scored two goals at the weekend, good finishes.

“For me, it would be unbelievably sad, it really would.”
