Barcelona finally call time on pursuit of Coutinho – report

Barcelona have given up in their bid to land Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to reports.

The Catalan giants have made two previous bids for the Brazilian before a reported last-ditch offer was on the table last night ahead of deadline in England.

Sport claims that Barcelona will not continue to pursue a deal for Coutinho at this time and they have now given up on landing him this window.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request and was reportedly prepared to go on strike but Sport says that Liverpool were not willing to sell at any price.

Neymar left Barca for PSG in a deal worth a world-record £198million with the club eyeing Ousmane Dembele – who they signed from Dortmund – and Coutinho as his replacements.

It is understood that Barca made a final offer of £148million last night after their two previous offers of £90million and £118million were turned down over the last few weeks.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Coutinho had been injured in recent weeks and that is why he couldn’t play for Liverpool in their opening Premier League matches.

However, his participation in Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador on Thursday has led to doubts from some quarters.

The report continues by saying that it is likely Barcelona will reignite their interest in Coutinho in January or next summer.
