Barcelona eye shock move for Arsenal star who is ‘happy in England’ according to agent
Barcelona are interested in Arsenal midfielder Jorginho and could make a move for him in the January transfer window according to reports.
Speculation surrounding the 31-year-old midfielder has been rife all summer, but the former Chelsea man has ultimately decided to stick around in London.
Clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey expressed an interest in signing him, but his agent has claimed that he is happy to stay at Arsenal.
“He will stay at Arsenal. He is happy to be in England. Let’s move on,” Joao Santos told TuttoMercatoWeb.
When asked whether any other clubs apart from Fenerbahce had made an approach, Santos added: “Some rumours, for example from Saudi Arabia.
“Someone called me, but nothing concrete. Jorginho is also appreciated in Spain, he’s an important player. He will stay at Arsenal.”
The Italian midfielder seems happy enough to stay in North London for the time being, but Barcelona could rock the boat with a move for him in January.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will look to sign another holding midfielder in January and Jorginho is on their list of potential targets.
The Italian midfielder is under contract with Arsenal until 2024, with the option of an extra year in his deal. If Barcelona came in with a reasonable offer, this deal could get off the ground.
As the Gunners have added Declan Rice to their midfield ranks this summer, Jorginho has had to settle for a supporting role so far.
He has made three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and has played just 18 minutes. While he hasn’t been given much game time so far, Arsenal do have a busy schedule on the horizon.
Their Champions League campaign kicks off later this month and they also have an EFL cup clash with Brentford to look forward to.
Mikel Arteta will be reliant upon his squad players in the coming months and Jorginho could yet have an important role to play.
