Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after they missed out on the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who’s gone to Real Madrid.

Bayern’s Manuel Neuer was injured while skiing in January 2023, which kept him out for the remainder of last season. However, the German is still out of action now.

With Bayern having allowed Yann Sommer to leave for Inter Milan over the summer, they’re now looking for somebody to take the no.1 spot. Currently, Sven Ulreich is the only fit senior keeper they have.

They’ve now got their eyes on Aston Villa man Martinez. That’s according to TyC Sports, who state he’s part of a list that also includes Stefan Ortega and David de Gea.

Bayern might find it somewhat difficult to make the signing, though. Indeed, the report cites Martinez’s contract renewal just last year as a reason it could be tough.

However, Martinez has been open about his desire to “play in the Champions League and try to win it”. In the immediate future, that’s much more likely with Bayern, who qualify every season, than with Villa.

The German side also have a top striker in Harry Kane, which could aid their chances. He’ll be hungry for honours, having swapped Tottenham for Bayern in search of that very thing.

While Villa’s upwards trajectory saw them secure European football for this season, it’s not the Champions League just yet. If their rise continues, they could soon find themselves playing in the top tournament though.

Bayern’s season started in horrendous fashion, as they were beaten 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup. Ulreich played in net that game, given he is the only fit senior goalkeeper.

They also took a blow when Kepa decided to join Real Madrid instead of them. The Bundesliga giants had reportedly planned his unveiling, suggesting the deal came very close, but that was scuppered when he made the move to Real.

As such, there’s a clear need to sign a goalkeeper.Whether they do attempt to sign Martinez, or anybody else named on their shortlist, remains to be seen.

They might be in line for a tough season if they’re not able to find themselves a quality keeper, though.
