Chelsea target Dumfries

Manchester United and Chelsea could find themselves in a “bidding war” for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.

The Netherlands full-back – who impressed at the World Cup – has been linked with the Premier League for some time, and both Chelsea and United are thought to be keen on strengthening in that area.

Chelsea require backup for Reece James, who returned for just 53 minutes against Bournemouth before suffering a recurrence of the knee injury that kept him out of the England squad for Qatar.

And although Aaron Wan-Bissaka is back in contention at United alongside Diogo Dalot, it’s thought Erik ten Hag still wants to improve his right-back options.

But both Bayern Munich and Tottenham are also said to be interest and may hold the advantage over the other two interested parties, as they are willing to offer a suitable player in exchange, according to Italian journalist Marco Barzaghi.

“Dumfries had a star turn in the World Cup, with goals and assists,” he told his YouTube channel (via Sport Witness).

“Given the prices that are circulating, 60 million could fit, but even 50 million could be good. A bidding war cannot be ruled out with Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

“(They) could offer the Moroccan flanker Mazraoui as a quid pro quo, but he costs and could fetch around 20 million. Tottenham is also on the player and could offer Emerson Royal.”

United manager Ten Hag confirmed this week that the club are looking for “quality players to cover”.

“I think we have a squad, we have players who are matching our criteria,” he said. “But all the games are coming. It’s a tough competition, in all the leagues, we want to be also in all the leagues and keep playing in all the leagues and in the cups as well.

“So we need players and we need numbers to cover. So we need good players, not just the numbers, we need quality players to cover. And also we need competition and we need to know also that we can make tactical choices.

“So we are looking for the right player for our squad, but it has to match our sporting criteria, definitely, but also some financial criteria.”
