Martin Keown thinks Maurizio Sarri’s decision to leave Callum Hudson-Odoi on the bench in Chelsea’s loss to Manchester United was “stupid”.
There is no shame in losing to United, but the supporters voiced frustrations over Sarri‘s stubborn refusal to compromise on his possession-based style and 4-3-3 formation.
First-half goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba were enough as United eased through to the quarter-finals at the expense of the Blues.
It was the baffling substitution of Cesar Azpilicueta, though, that really irked Keown with Sarri deciding to bring on Davide Zappacosta instead of an attacking option like Hudson-Odoi.
Responding to the change, Keown said during BBC commentary: “He’s [Hudson-Odoi] probably wondering isn’t he.
“I mean they’re two goals down and he’s put a defender on.
“Is it a political move from the manager because it’s a stupid one if it is.”
