Bebe has admitted that he – along with the rest of the footballing world – thought his transfer to Manchester United in 2010 was “a joke”.

Despite having never seen the Portuguese play, Sir Alex Ferguson sanctioned a deal to sign Bebe for £7million five years ago to much surprise.

Bebe came at the recommendation of the then much lesser-known Jorge Mendes, and made just seven appearances in all competitions for the club before leaving in 2014.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, the 25-year-old, now with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano on loan from Benfica, has admitted his shock at how the deal came about.

“It was very fast, a surprise,” Bebe said. “One day I was training and was suddenly told to go, I would sign a five-year contract. I didn’t know if it was a joke.

“It was the dream of many children, it seems crazy. When I arrived I was there with the best in the world. It took me a while, taking deep breaths the first week, but I got used to it.”
