Benitez getting grouchy at Newcastle’s transfer inactivity

Rafael Benitez has again stressed that his Newcastle United squad needs far more depth, with the season only four days away.

Benitez has regularly repeated the need for investment on his squad, but has reportedly been told by Mike Ashley that he needs to sell before he can buy.

Newcastle have signed five players this summer, but Javier Manquillo is likely to be backup, Mikel Merino is only on loan and Christian Atsu was already at the club last season.

In particular, Benitez wants a striker after Dwight Gayle missed their final preseason game with a sore hamstring.

“When I decided to stay I was expecting another thing,” Benitez said. “Now we are where we are.”

“I decided to stay because of a lot of positive things I could see starting with the fans.

“Now I will try to do my best to be sure that the team we have will be good enough to compete and stay as high as we can in the Premier League..

“We are trying to move players out to bring players in. We know what we need.

“We are looking at different options. If we can’t get one, we have to look at others.

“We know what we need and will try to do this until the end of the transfer window. We are trying to go in different directions at the same time.”

Lose Benitez, and Ashley will have a riot on his hands.
