Berbatov on Spurs: ‘The irony was that we won a cup’

Dimitar Berbatov admits the current Tottenham side are “better” than the team he played in at White Hart Lane.

The Bulgarian scored 46 times in all competitions for Spurs and was a BT Sport pundit as he watched his former club draw 1-1 with Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

The result sent Tottenham into the last-16 of the Champions League with the scoreline matching Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw against PSV.

Berbatov was part of the Spurs side that beat Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, which was the club’s last major trophy.

“This is the better team when I was there,” the Bulgarian told BT Sport. “But the irony was that we won a cup when I was there but they are yet to win a trophy.

“On a personal level, you need to show up and say ‘I’m a great player’ but what did you win in the end? You go home and think, ‘am I going to win something?’

“But (progressing) in the Champions League, it tells you in the head that you’re going in the right direction.’

Berbatov added: “This is the stage to show they are one of the best clubs in the world. They need to try and win something.

“This is how you keep your best players —by winning something.”
