Brighton centre-half Burn joins Newcastle on deal until 2025
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Brighton centre-half Dan Burn on a two-and-a-half-year contract.
The Magpies have been trying endlessly to sign a new central defender this month and after failed attempts to bring in Lille’s Sven Botman and Diego Carlos from Sevilla, they have brought in Burn.
He has signed a deal lasting until the summer of 2025 and becomes Eddie Howe’s fifth signing of the January transfer window.

Burn said: “I’m buzzing to be here. I never thought I’d be in this position so to be a Newcastle player and to be around St. James’ Park, it’s something I’ve dreamt of since I was a kid.
“I can’t wait to step out in the shirt and to see what it feels like. From sitting in the East Stand as a kid to now, it’s crazy. I’m excited to get started.”
Howe said: “I’m delighted to bring Dan back to the North East. He knows exactly what it means to represent this club and he will be a big presence for us on and off the pitch.
“We have been very keen to add competition defensively and Dan fits the profile we have been looking for. He is naturally left-footed, which provides further balance to our backline, and he will be a great addition to the group.”

Burn was released by the Magpies as a youngster and spent three-and-a-half years at Brighton.
Meanwhile, Man Utd have claimed that their intention was always to keep Jesse Lingard at the club despite interest from Newcastle and West Ham, according to reports.
The 29-year-old is yet to start a Premier League match this season under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or his interim replacement Ralf Rangnick.
Lingard has only started two out of 14 appearances in all competitions this campaign, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
Newcastle had been ‘pushing’ all day to take Lingard to St James’ Park on loan until the end of the season – but there were rumours earlier in the window that Man Utd were demanding a huge £12m survival bonus if the Magpies survived.
In the end it was reported that Newcastle offered a ‘£3m loan fee + £4m survival bonus’ but that Lingard had been told that ‘he will not be allowed’ to leave on deadline day.
And the Manchester Evening News insists that Man Utd have told them that ‘their original plan’ was for Lingard ‘to stay for the remainder of the season’ despite interest from Newcastle and West Ham.
