Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn has suffered knee ligament damage ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League season, according to reports.

The defender had spells at Fulham and Wigan Athletic before he signed for Brighton in 2018.

Burn has been an ever-present from the 2019/20 season onwards as he has featured 61 times in the Premier League.

The centre-back played 32 for the Seagulls last season as they finished 16th in the top flight.

Brighton face Burnley at Turf Moor in the first Premier League game of the 2021/22 season next week, but Burn will not be involved.

The Athletic have reported that the 29-year-old suffered knee ligament damage during Brighton’s friendly against Luton Town last Saturday.

The report adds: “Burn went off early in the second half. His foot stuck in the turf as he slid into a challenge on Luton forward Harry Cornick.

“It is unclear how long Burn will be out for but he is likely to miss the opening three matches prior to the international break in September.

“Burn’s absence compounds the defensive headaches for head coach Graham Potter.

“Ben White has been sold to Arsenal and Tariq Lamptey (hamstring) has been ruled out of the start of the season.

“Skipper Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster, unavailable so far during pre-season, will get much-needed minutes at home to Getafe on Saturday night (kick-off at 7pm).”

Elsewhere, earlier this week it was announced that Webster had penned a new five-year deal at Brighton.

The defender signed for Graham Potter’s side from Championship outfit Bristol City for around £20m in 2019. Speaking on the extension, Webster said:

“I am absolutely over the moon to sign a new deal. As soon as I heard there was the potential for me to sign a new contract I was thrilled and I am pleased to get it done. Now I can focus on the new season.

“The club have shown a lot of faith in me to bring me here in the first place, to reward me with a new contract is amazing and I can’t wait for the next five years.”
