Bundesliga side accepts Man Utd-linked forward will move to ‘bigger club’ for free, as queue forms

Borussia Monchengladbach have confirmed striker Marcus Thuram will be “allowed” to leave “for free,” as they have accepted there are “bigger clubs he might move to”.

Thuram has been the subject of pursuit by a number of Europe’s biggest sides over the past year. Indeed, there are a host of sides, particularly in England, that seem keen to take him on board.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United are on that list, to name just a few. However, Monchengladbach have been keen on keeping their striker under wraps.

Indeed, they’ve been keen on tying him down for a while in order to keep him at the club. With his contract ending at the end of the season, they would have needed to come to an agreement soon.

However, they’ve not been able to do so and they’ve accepted that the forward will be moving on. That’s according to the club’s sporting director Roland Virkus.

“We’ve decided to allow Thuram to leave. The fact he will leave for free is not a positive situation. I can’t sugarcoat it. We have to accept that there are bigger clubs he might move to,” he told Sport1.

That the club aren’t happy with allowing Thuram to go for free is not a surprise. He’s scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 20 Bundesliga games this season and is the league’s joint third-highest goalscorer.

As such, they’d have been able to receive a decent fee for him, with the amount of sides interested, if he’d have had a year or two left on his deal.

The most favourable option was likely keeping him so that he could perform in a Monchengladbach shirt for longer.

With the news that he’s going to be on his way out of the club, a lot of interested sides will be on alert. Reports recently have suggested there have been a number of sides in talks over a move, both recently and now.

Chelsea wanted to move for him in January but were turned down. At that point, Man Utd were reportedly his favoured destination if he was to move.

Of late, Newcastle and Aston Villa have reportedly both opened talks over a move for him when his contract ends. As such, we could see him in the Premier League next season.
