Buxton underwent surgery in March and stepped up his rehabilitation on Monday when he joined in with the rest of the Rams squad.
The next step for the 30-year-old centre-half will be a run-out for the under-21 side, although Monday evening’s fixture against Aston Villa at St George’s Park will come too soon for him to be involved.
Derby head coach Paul Clement said: “Jake has worked very hard to get to this point.
“He had a serious injury. When you have surgery on your back, it takes time.
“He will now need further time to get up to speed with first-team training and then game practice, but it was good to have him back.”
