Moises Caicedo is having ‘second thoughts’ about joining Liverpool this summer amid interest from Chelsea, according to reports.

Liverpool have agreed a British record transfer fee in the region of £110million for Caicedo as the Reds look to shore up their midfield on the eve of the new season.

The 21-year-old has been on Chelsea’s radar and the Blues – who will take on Liverpool in both sides’ Premier League opener on Sunday – were thought of as front-runners to sign the Ecuador international.

But Brighton have held firm in their valuation of a player who joined them for just £4m from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle two years ago and now the Reds are now poised to sweep in.

Liverpool, who are aiming to reinforce their options in the middle of the park following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this summer, will pay upwards of the previous British record fee of £107m that Chelsea forked out for Enzo Fernandez in January.

The fee for Caicedo dwarfs Liverpool’s own transfer record of £75m, which they paid Southampton for defender Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

But Sky Sports have now claimed that they’ve heard Caicedo is having ‘second thoughts’ over a potential move to Liverpool with the player waiting to see if Chelsea return with another offer.

Sky Sports state on their transfer blog: ‘Sky Sports News has been told Moises Caicedo is having second thoughts about a move to Liverpool.

‘The player and his representatives remain in London.

‘There is no official word yet if Chelsea have returned with an improved offer for the Brighton midfielder.’

Former CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs also brought an update on the situation, he wrote: “Chelsea this morning asked Moises Caicedo to wait as they explore a way of hijacking Liverpool’s own hijack. Caicedo hasn’t travelled for a medical yet. #LFC have a £111m deal agreed with Brighton, but #CFC actively exploring options. One of the craziest stories of any window.”

Jurgen Klopp has previously said that he could never envisage Liverpool spending over £100m on one player and when his previous quotes were put back to him, he said: “Everything changed, yeah? Do I like it? No. Did I realise I was wrong? Yes definitely.

“That’s the way it goes, it’s not great, it’s not top, but it’s the way it goes and it will not go the other way around again – Saudi Arabia definitely will not help with that. I’m not blaming anybody, it just will not help with it. It’s another market with a lot of money.

“In the end, we as a club have to try and make sure with our resources and the money we have we get the best possible team together.

“We all know in football that 50 per cent will like it and 50 per cent won’t, or would say they would have done things differently.

“But believe me, we are really trying to bring together the best team and squad for us, that’s the idea.

“We are not in dreamland, we cannot just point at players and bring them in, there is a lot of work to do these kinds of things. Sometimes one door closes and another opens up, that happens.

“If people want to throw my quotes from five or six years ago, no problem. That is what I thought on that day, and I realise now I was wrong – it’s easy to admit that.”
