Jamie Carragher has offered his thoughts on Liverpool’s reported interest in West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen.

Jurgen Klopp is said to be an admirer of Bowen and Liverpool have been heavily linked with him of late.

West Ham paid £18m plus add-ons to sign him from Hull City in 2020. He is currently enjoying his best campaign to date for the Hammers.

The Englishman has been involved in 16 goals from his 28 Premier League outings in 2021/22.

West Ham are enjoying another successful season under David Moyes and Bowen has been one of their star players.

The Hammers came up against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Sadio Mane scored as the hosts won 1-0.

Speaking during this game, Carragher suggested that it is “always difficult” for Liverpool to sign wide players given Mohamed Salah’s performances.

The Egyptian has been in supreme form this campaign. He has provided 19 goals and ten assists in the league:

“There’s talk of Liverpool’s interest in him [Bowen] and you can see why with the goals and assists he gets, but also the positions he takes up,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“Even that one [the position he took up before his injury], the position he gets in when Virgil van Dijk heads it back.

“He plays very narrow, as Liverpool’s wide players do.

“But I just think it’s always difficult for Liverpool to ever buy anyone in that position when you’ve got Mo Salah. Not just his quality, but he very rarely misses games.”

Liverpool manager Klopp continues to be bemused at critics who claim Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot defend.

The England right-back was a decisive force in the win over West Ham which kept up the pressure in the title race.

Klopp said: “Absolutely, I don’t understand that, that’s true. But I don’t think I will change that with whatever I will say.

“But if he couldn’t defend, he would not play here – at least not that in that position.

“He improved in all departments and defending of course as well, but he is that young that he can improve and has to improve, but yes, his defending is not a problem we have.”
