‘Your paymaster!’ – Carragher hits back as Rio reignites feud over Gerrard to Saudi silence
Jamie Carragher has hit back at Rio Ferdinand after the former Manchester United defender reignited the punditry pair’s war of words, this time over Steven Gerrard’s move to Saudi Arabia.
Gerrard has joined a host of Premier League players in moving to Saudi having agreed to manage Al-Ettifaq next season.
The Saudi’s have pumped billions of pounds into their football league in a bid to compete with the top clubs in Europe, with Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves and Edouard Mendy among the big names attracted by huge contracts.
Carragher has voiced his concern over players moving to Saudi but is yet to comment on former Liverpool teammate Gerrard’s decision, which led Ferdinand to take a swipe at his fellow pundit, renewing a feud that has raged over the last year or so.
Rio told his FIVE YouTube channel: “Jamie. Jamie Carragher. Where are you man? I heard a lot of talk, a lot of negativity about Saudi. Oh, Bernardo Silva, I can’t believe it. It’s a disgrace, it needs investigating, this league, et cetera.
“Steven Gerrard’s gone. You used to carry his boots and his bag at Anfield to games. Your boy’s gone over there and I’ve not heard a peep out of you. I’ve not heard how disappointed you are. I want to see him say ‘I can’t believe Stevie’s gone there’.
“I’m actually buzzing for any of the guys that have gone out to Saudi. Because it’s Saudi, people are going mad, but all these other countries and leagues over the years have done exactly the same thing.”
Carragher his back on Twitter, and insisted he wasn’t surprised to see Ferdinand take the Saudi’s side, given the money involved.
Accompanied by money-mouth emojis, Carragher tweeted: ‘Never criticised Silva, Benzema, Neves or SG, I don’t like Saudi trying to buy football like they have Golf.
‘I knew you’d be all over it @rioferdy5 like you were in Qatar! Thats why you refused to do the opening game for @BBCMOTD didn’t want to criticise your paymaster!’
