Jamie Carragher makes Graham Potter sack prediction after Chelsea ‘fed information’ to journalists

Carragher wary about Chelsea

Jamie Carragher still thinks Graham Potter will be sacked by Chelsea before next season even though they are through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The pressure has been pilling on Potter in recent months. Chelsea’s wretched run of form has seen them exit the Carabao Cup and FA Cup prematurely.

A remarkable end-of-season run of wins is needed to get Chelsea into the top four as they are 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

Chelsea’s six-game winless run was ended last weekend as they beat Leeds United 1-0. They followed that up with a win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last-16.

The Blues trailed 1-0 after the first leg but they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to run out 2-1 victors on aggregate. Potter will be hoping that Chelsea can go far in the Champions League so they can salvage something from what has otherwise been a disastrous campaign.

A win over Leicester City in the Premier League this weekend would further ease the pressure that is currently on Potter.

Despite their recent positive results, Carragher still feels that Chelsea will sack Potter before the start of next season.

“The fans aren’t going to change after one game but I think this gives him time to get them on board,” Carragher told CBS Sports.

“He’s going to be there until the end of the season now. There were questions a few days ago as journalists were getting fed information from the club that he could be on a knife-edge.

“He’s won both games and that will be massive for him. Once you get to the Champions League quarter-finals, you’re almost at the end of the season so they’re not going to change it.

“They’re not going to make the top four in terms of league position but [the Champions League] could be the way they make it.

“They have got great pedigree when you think of the history they’ve got in European competition. That cements [Potter] until the end of the season, but whether he’s there next season or not? I still don’t think he will be.”

Potter stated after Chelsea’s win over Dortmund that the club’s players and supporters “were tremendous”.

“A fantastic atmosphere, a fantastic evening, the players were tremendous, the supporters were tremendous,” Potter said.

“They had to be against a team that was doing so well. I think over the two games we deserved to go through, it was a special night.”

He added: “My job is to prepare the team as best we could and support them. They’ve been suffering, nobody has enjoyed the run we’ve had, that’s why today was important.”
