Carragher reacts to shock decision to drop Mignolet

Jamie Carragher has described Jurgen Klopp’s decision to drop Simon Mignolet against Arsenal as “bizarre”.

Loris Karius is expected to start against the Gunners on Sunday, with Danny Ward on the bench.

That leaves Mignolet, who has played well in the club’s first two Premier League games of the season, as well as in their Champions League play-off victories over Hoffenheim, out of the matchday squad altogether.

Klopp’s decision has generated plenty of controversy in the build-up to the game, and Carragher cannot understand it.

“Bizarre,” Carragher told Sky Sports when asked about the decision.

“I can’t get my head around it. Again it shows Jurgen Klopp still has a lack of confidence in both goalkeepers.

“This thing about resting, if you’re going to rest them, Jurgen Klopp made lots of changes against Crystal Palace, that was the game. Not in a game as big as this.

“Going into the international break, Thierry (Henry) is with the Belgium squad and he just told me Courtois will be playing.

“He’s not going to play for two weeks anyway.

“So this thing about being rested. Was De Gea rested yesterday? Courtois? Lloris?

“All these top keepers. You’re not resting them.”
