Jamie Carragher thinks new signing Luis Diaz “could make a massive difference” to Liverpool in the final stages of the season.

The 25-year-old forward joined Liverpool from Porto in the January transfer window, with the Reds beating Tottenham to the punch.

Diaz had already featured for the Reds five times before producing a brilliant display as Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in the League Cup final.

The Colombia international brought lots of energy and flair to Liverpool down the left-hand side on Sunday with Carragher impressed by what he saw.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “The interesting point about the Diaz signing is Liverpool only signed him because Tottenham went for him.

“I think he could make a massive difference to Liverpool at this stage of the season not just because of his performances, he was brilliant today but you think what Liverpool’s team would have been if he hadn’t signed.

“Jota wasn’t right, Firmino missed out so you would’ve gone into the game with just Salah and Mane and maybe Minamino and Origi who we know isn’t quite at their level whereas Diaz is at their level.

“This fella could make a huge difference for Liverpool in terms of winning trophies.”

Carragher added: “What tells you how well he played was that Sadio Mane got brought off. This guy stayed on and he looks the real deal.

“He’s only played four or five games and possibly over those games he’s been Liverpool’s best player in that time period. This guy coming in now looks like being another one.”

Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final hero Caoimhin Kelleher admits he would rather have saved a penalty than scored one in their shoot-out win over Chelsea which secured a record ninth success in the competition.

“Someone said to me afterwards, ‘You scored the winning penalty’ but I wasn’t really bothered about that,” Kelleher told liverpoolfc.com.

“I was more bothered that I wanted to make a save but thank God anyway I scored and we got the win.

“I was dreaming good things (the night before), that we would win, but never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d score a penalty at the Liverpool end, the winning penalty. That’s just next level.”
