Jamie Carragher has questioned Neymar’s decision to move to PSG, claiming it was purely motivated by money.

Neymar was in sparkling form as PSG reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second year in a row.

The French giants got revenge over Bayern Munich, who beat them in the final of the competition last season.

But Carragher believes the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are wasted at PSG, claiming the duo should be plying their trade in a more competitive league than Ligue 1.

“He’s gone there to do something that the club’s never done before, and also to win the Ballon d’Or,” Carragher said on CBS. “They were the two reasons he went there.

“I think to go there was to get out of Messi’s shadow at Barcelona, he didn’t feel he’d ever win the Ballon d’Or.

“The Ballon d’Or… for the best players in the world it is something to aim for, that’s the dream, the best players in the world go for that year in, year out.

“If PSG win the Champions League this year, it’ll be a toss up between him and Mbappe who’ll win the Ballon d’Or.

“So they were the reasons he went. I don’t like to see him there; I don’t think players of the quality of Neymar and Mbappe should be playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

“[Sorry] if I upset PSG fans. They shouldn’t be playing in the French league. It’s a poor league, it’s an average league, and it’s just about these Champions League nights, basically.”

When pressed on whether PSG winning the competition will disprove his argument, Carragher replied: “Not at all. We’re talking about the French league.

“Whatever league he plays in, he’ll be in the Champions League. Whether it’s Barcelona, in England, France, Italy, it doesn’t matter.

“Playing week in, week out in France, players of that quality shouldn’t be playing in that league. It’s not good enough.”

He later added: “The top players don’t play in France. They’re only there for money. No-one can tell me the French league is a top league.”
