Edinson Cavani has revealed that he said no to two Italian clubs to sign for Manchester United on a free transfer this summer.

The Uruguay international joined Man United this summer after his contract with PSG expired. He spent seven years playing in France in a spell that yielded a lot of success.

The forward netted 200 times from his 301 appearances for PSG. He won the Ligue 1 title in six of the seven years he was there.

Before joining PSG, he spent three years with Napoli between 2010 and 2013. In that time he scored 104 times from just 138 appearances.

Cavani told Mondo Napoli – when speaking on their decision to rename their stadium after Diego Maradona – that his allegiances to Napoli led to his decision to turn down moves to Juventus and Inter Milan:

“I saw it and I am very excited. It is yet another demonstration of affection from Naples that I will never forget.

“The emotion is doubled seeing my children admire that mural. It cannot be explained. To the fans, I only say thank you. I will always be grateful to them.

“It is for this reason that I said no to many Italian clubs including Juventus, who called me often, and also Inter.

“I couldn’t make such a gesture to the Neapolitans.”
