Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender David Luiz has reached a “verbal agreement” with Flamengo over a move to Brazil, according to reports.

The centre-back has spent eight-and-a-half years in the Premier League throughout his career.

Luiz first made the move to England in 2011 as he joined Chelsea from Benfica. He won the Champions League during his first spell at the club.

The Brazilian re-joined Chelsea in 2016 after a couple of years in France with PSG. He enjoyed a successful couple of seasons as he helped his side win the Premier League title in 2016/17.

Luiz left the Blues for a second time in 2019 as he moved to their London rivals Arsenal for a fee in the region of £8m.

The 34-year-old played 73 times for the Gunners over the past two seasons. He left in July when his contract at the club expired.

He has been without a team since then but he now looks set to return to Brazil to sign for Flamengo.

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported (via Twitter) that Luiz is “set to join” the Brazilian side. He adds that a “verbal agreement” has been reached and he will sign a deal until 2022.

Elsewhere, Thomas Tuchel believes that Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner will strike up a strong partnership at Chelsea:

“I am sure that we will find games and solutions where we play with both of them (Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku).

“We did already and Timo and Romelu can be a good fit together. Timo loves to play around a reference up front and Romelu is clearly our reference up front being a tall and physical player.

“The most important is he finds his rhythm and confidence and joy and makes his point and makes his way into the team. The players are in charge to take their positions and fight for their positions and once they have it to not give it away.

“We are very happy that he scored and played (for Germany in the international break) and on we go. We have not too many players but we have players with high quality and high ambition and Timo is clearly a guy that we count on and that is absolutely necessary we have him on high level.”
