Chelsea star drops transfer ‘bomb’ with £107m star ‘seriously considering’ exit

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is “seriously considering” leaving Stamford Bridge only six months after joining from Benfica, according to reports.

The Blues spent €121m on the Argentina star at the end of the January transfer window with the 22-year-old remaining the Premier League club’s record transfer.

Chelsea did sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton but the fee fell €5m short of the amount the Blues paid Portuguese side Benfica for Fernandez.

There has been a lot of player turnover since a Todd Boehly-led consortium took over the club in May 2022 with over £1bn spent on transfers in that time.

And Spanish publication Fichajes insist that Fernandez has dropped a ‘bomb’ on Chelsea with the Argentine ‘not having the prominence he expected‘.

The report adds that is ‘partly due to a football level below expectations’  and that Fernandez is ‘seriously considering his departure from the London club if his situation in the team does not improve under the direction of’ Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea have struggled to match his ambitions with a 12th-placed finish last term meaning they aren’t playing in a European competition this term.

And they are currently in the exact same position this term after four Premier League matches with former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson questioning “how long” Fernandez will put up with below-par performances before he seeks an exit.

Merson said on Sky Sports: “Chelsea have brought in a million players and you think: ‘How do you get a team out of this lot?’ Chelsea is about winning trophies. It’s not Tottenham, trying to get in the top four, but that’s where it’s got to – so quickly, as well.

“Mauricio Pochettino will get it right because he’s a good manager, but it’s going to be hard. If they get in the top four then they will be pulling up trees.

“They’ve bought too many players that are the same. Enzo Fernandez is different class – a cut above the rest. But how long will he stand for this?”

On Chelsea’s start to the season, Merson added: “There’s not enough guile in the team. You haven’t got players that will put the ball through the eye of a needle.

“Teams will go to Stamford Bridge, set up 10 players behind the ball and counter-attack. I said on Saturday that Chelsea would get beaten 1-0. I know how they struggle against teams that play 10 at the back.

“They can’t break teams down. It’s like watching Subbuteo football – there’s no movement. Unless Fernandez finds that killer pass, no one else will.”
