Chelsea fend off Man City advances as Ornstein confirms star will pen new deal

Transfer insider David Ornstein has revealed that Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell is ‘set to commit his future’ to the club until 2027, amid interest from Manchester City.

There aren’t too many Chelsea players that have covered themselves in glory this season. Indeed, you only need to look at the table to see the majority of the squad has been below the Blues’ standards.

Chelsea are 11th, and have seen the back of two managers as a result of poor performances.

Chilwell is one of the few stars at the club that has managed to perform in spite of a tough campaign. The full-back – either side of a hamstring injury – has directly contributed to five league goals in 19 games.

His ability on both sides of the ball has been evident since he joined from Leicester City in 2020. That he’s standing out in a poor Chelsea side gives solid reasoning to transfer interest from Man City.

Indeed, the Premier League giants have reportedly identified Chilwell as a target for the summer, with reports suggesting the Blues could look to sell.

However, insider Ornstein has now reported Chelsea will manage to tie the star down despite that interest.

Indeed, The Athletic report suggests Chilwell is ‘set to commit his future to the club by signing a new four-year deal’.

That’ll prolong his contract, which is currently set to run out in 2025, until 2027. This is a positive step for Chelsea amid a tumultuous period on and off the pitch.

While the report doesn’t mention his wages, it states Chilwell’s new deal ‘confirms his standing in the eyes of the American-led ownership group’.

Indeed, tying one of the club’s best performers down is a statement that the ownership has faith in the side. They could just as easily have shipped him off to City for a decent fee and gone in search of a player to replace him with.

The Blues will hope retaining their most important players alongside new signings will aid their attempts to climb the league next season.

There is clearly a squad in place that can fight at the top of the table, they’ve just not gelled yet, seemingly because of the massive influx in such a short space of time.

Somebody like Chilwell will be a big cog in the Blues machine amid that rise, bringing both consistency and experience.
