Reported Chelsea target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea reportedly ‘keep pushing’ to sign former Arsenal hero Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after a ‘key intermediary’ was spotted in the Barcelona offices.

Rumours of Chelsea’s interest in the Gabon international emerged last week as Thomas Tuchel looks to continue to improve his options before the close of the transfer window.

The Blues’ focus is on defence as they target another centre-back following the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly, and they’re reportedly locked in talks with Leicester over a fee for Wesley Fofana, who is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.

But Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is looking to improve other areas of the squad, including the forward options following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

Raheem Sterling has already arrived and reports on Tuesday claim they’re also looking at Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.

But a ‘proper striker’ would be nice and Spanish journalist Gerard Romero claims they ‘keep pushing’ for Aubameyang.

Romero took to Twitter to suggest talks are underway after he spotted Eugenio Botas, who was key in getting Aubameyang to Barcelona, at the offices of the La Liga giants.

The Catalans are thought to be keen on seeing the back of the 33-year-old as they need to make room for new signings and have seen Robert Lewandowski come in from Bayern Munich this summer.

Gus Poyet says his former club should jump at the chance to sign Aubameyang.

“No doubt,” he told Lord Ping on whether signing the Gabon forward would be a good move. “Aubameyang would be perfect. He looks happy and back to his best scoring goals.

“I do not know why this summer Chelsea and Barcelona are constantly trying to sign the same players and steal from each other. They are not similar clubs, but they are trying to buy the exact same players.

“I can’t see the Aubameyang signing happening but I would be happily surprised.”

Tuchel, who worked with Aubameyang in his time with Borussia Dortmund, may well be keen to reunite with the striker, but admits he may not fancy taking the number 9 shirt.

“It’s cursed, it’s cursed, people tell me it’s cursed!” joked Tuchel.

“It’s not the case that we leave it open for tactical reasons, or for some players in the pipeline that come in and naturally take it.

“There was not a big demand for number nine, when like players sometimes want to change numbers. But, surprisingly, nobody wants to touch it.

“Everybody who is longer than me in the club tells me ‘ah, you know, like he had the nine and he did not score and he had the nine and did also not score’.

“So now we have a moment where nobody wants to touch the number nine.”
