Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has claimed Eden Hazard is “sad” at Real Madrid, amidst rumours of a return to Chelsea in January.

Hazard left the Londoners in 2019 to join Madrid for a fee in the region of £88million.

He has struggled to make an impact at the Santiago Bernabeu, with injuries hampering his time in Spain.

The 30-year-old is now the fittest he’s been since leaving Chelsea, says Martinez, and the former Wigan Athletic boss has urged Real Madrid to stand by the winger.

“Hazard is medically in his best moment since he arrived at Real Madrid,” Martinez said on COPE’s show El Partidazo (quotes via Metro).

“He is sad in football terms, this is the first time that he is experiencing this situation.

“He is a player who has always led winning projects and now he doesn’t have that role, but he is a footballer of exceptional talent and that is never lost, you have to have faith in him.”

Rumours of a move back to Stamford Bridge have popped up numerous times in recent weeks, with ABC now reporting that Chelsea will look to sign Hazard on loan in January.

The Belgium star has also been linked with a move to Newcastle United, who are ready to splash the cash after they were bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Sport claim Hazard is Newcastle’s ‘main target’ as they desperately attempt to avoid relegation this season.

Furthermore, Spanish outlet El Chiringuito say the Magpies want the Chelsea legend to be one of the “stars” of their new team.

And former Bournemouth midfielder Jack Wilshere believes Hazard would “love” to play under new Toon head coach Eddie Howe.

“He was great with me [at Bournemouth], because it was tough for me there because I was coming from a big club,” Wilshere told talkSPORT.

“Eden Hazard is another level, but I think Eden would love playing for a manager like Eddie Howe [at Newcastle]. He’s the type of manager you want to play for.”
