Chelsea ‘monitor’ £44m Liverpool target but ‘two major issues’ emerge with transfer ‘agreement’ close

Chelsea have reportedly joined Liverpool in looking to sign Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes from their Premier League rivals Wolves.

The centre-midfielder signed for Wolves last summer. This was viewed as a bit of a coup as Liverpool were previously linked with him.

Nunes has hit the ground running for Wolves this season and he was part of Portugal’s squad at the World Cup.

Wolves may prove to be a stepping stone for Nunes as he is already being targeted by other clubs.

Liverpool are said to be back in for him as they attempt to strengthen in the middle of the pitch.

The Reds are keen to sign Jude Bellingham. But they are looking to acquire two midfielders and Nunes appears to be a viable option as a more defensive alternative.

But journalist Simon Phillips is reporting that Liverpool face competition from Chelsea for Nunes.

Signing Nunes will not be an easy task though as Liverpool are trying to beat the competition to sign him this month and it will be an expensive deal.

‘I’ve been told this week that the latest centre midfielder being monitored by Chelsea is Wolves man Matheus Nunes. Chelsea are keeping tabs on the Portuguese international,’ he wrote for Si and Dan Talk Chelsea.

‘I can only assume that this would be for the summer, rather than this month. But again, I’d rule nothing out.

‘There are of course, two major issues with this potential target. One being the fact that Liverpool want him and are already trying to get ahead of the competition to sign him. There’s even been talks that they want him this month.

‘The second problem though, is the fact he only joined Wolves in the summer and has a long contract until 2027, with an option to extend that by a further year. So as you can see, it looks like it would be a real battle for Chelsea to even have a chance of signing Nunes.’

It was recently suggested that Liverpool primed to ‘agree a deal’ to sign Nunes for around £44m. Phillips adds that the Wolves man is at least on Chelsea’s ‘shortlist’.

‘Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal, are all currently looking at a number of the same midfielders and are all prioritising these types of profiles now and for the summer, so we could have more battles on our hands going forward. Another prime reason to get Enzo done now,’ Phillips added.

‘I always like to put out whatever news I get given, and this is from a good source.

‘Nunes joins a shortlist of midfielders that Chelsea are currently looking at for this month and for the summer. I don’t expect anything to come of this link yet though, if at all. But let’s see.’
