Chelsea target Rice alternative

According to reports, Chelsea are ‘tracking’ PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare ahead of this summer as a cheaper alternative to Declan Rice.

The Englishman had a spell at Chelsea as a youngster but they let him go before he could make his senior debut.

Rice was quickly snapped by West Ham United and it has proven to be an inspired decision to sign him.

The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the standout players in the Premier League in recent years.

The Hammers reportedly rate him at £150m and they are desperate to keep him. Earlier this week it was revealed that Rice ‘will reject’ West Ham’s £200,000 a week contract offer.

The Mirror are reporting that Sangare is being ‘tracked’ as an alternative to Rice. PSV are said to value him at £30m.

The 24-year-old has been an ever-present for the Dutch side over the past two seasons, playing 87 times. His contract expires in 2025.

The report adds that ‘Thomas Tuchel ready to rip up’ his Chelsea squad as part of a ‘huge summer overhaul’.

Elsewhere, Graeme Souness believes Mason Mount is “top class” and has proved the Chelsea fans, who apparently doubted him, wrong with his performances.

Mount put in a classy display at Elland Road on Wednesday night as Chelsea brushed Leeds aside 3-0 to all but secure Champions League football next season.

The England international opened the scoring with a brilliant finish into the top corner, before setting up Christian Pulisic for the second of the game.

Mount has had his doubters, mainly fans of other clubs, but Souness claimed it was the Chelsea supporters who have been proved wrong by the 23-year-old’s consistent quality.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: “What a boy this is. I think he’s top class.

“I remember a couple of years ago the Chelsea supporters doubting him. There’s nothing to doubt about him.

“He’s energetic, he’s a workaholic, he’s got great skills, an eye for a goal and eye for a killer pass – he’s just a top player at such a young age.”
