Chelsea star Aubameyang

Chelsea have been encouraged to “get rid” of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang “as soon as possible” after his dismal performance against Manchester City.

Aubameyang left Arsenal at the start of 2022 following a fallout with head coach Mikel Arteta.

The forward was a great goalscorer for the Gunners but he was difficult to work with towards the end of his time at the club.

The forward was quickly snapped up by FC Barcelona. He was in pretty good form for them towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign as he netted 13 goals in 23 outings.

But Robert Lewandowski’s arrival in the summer impacted his situation and Chelsea recruited him on deadline day in the summer after Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner left the club.

Aubameyang reunited with Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. The pair have a strong relationship following their time together at Borussia Dortmund.

This reunion did not last long as Blues co-owner Todd Boehly sacked Tuchel shortly after Aubameyang’s arrival.

The striker has struggled this season as he has only netted three times in 15 appearances.

Aubameyang has only started four times for Chelsea in the Premier League. He was brought on for Raheem Sterling early on against Man City on Thursday night.

The 33-year-old struggled to make an impact against the Premier League holders and he was brought off after playing for an hour in the 1-0 defeat.

Stan Collymore has hit out at Aubameyang and called on Chelsea to “pay him up” so he can leave before his contract expires in 2024.

“As for Aubameyang, the punt at the time was worth it,” Collymore tweeted.

“Now? Get rid ASAP before he has any influence over the dressing room. Has no place at a GP Chelsea whatsoever. Pay him up if necessary.

“Will only go south fast now. Probably in a gold Lamborghini.”

Chris Sutton meanwhile has argued that Aubameyang was “woeful and hopeless” against Man City.

“Aubameyang looked like he didn’t want to be here this evening. He’s not the only one,” Sutton told BBC Sport post-match.

“[Marc] Cucurella, they’ve spent an absolute fortune on him and he looks well, well short for a Chelsea team that want to win trophies.

“I wonder whether Graham Potter is thinking, ‘how can I play Aubameyang again in a Chelsea jersey?’, after how woeful he was.

“I’m always wary to criticise players for lack of effort or poor body language but Aubameyang absolutely epitomised that.

“I thought he was woeful and hopeless and didn’t give anywhere near enough.

“He looked disinterested and I suspect Graham Potter will be thinking, ‘blimey, he is never going to play in a Chelsea jersey again under me’.”
