Ally McCoist believes that a move to Newcastle could be ‘perfect’ for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher due to their style of play.
Gallagher has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month with both Newcastle and Crystal Palace reportedly being interested.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Palace and scored eight league goals. He started in the majority of their matches and racked up over 2800 minutes of Premier League football.
Gallagher has featured in 17 of Chelsea’s league matches this season, although nine of his appearances have come from the bench.
McCoist has reacted to the latest transfer news surrounding Gallagher and he thinks that Newcastle could be the perfect move for him.
The pundit told talkSPORT: “Conor Gallagher’s the kind of player I think that Newcastle would be going for. Young, hungry, that would make a signing.
“The way he plays the game, the Newcastle fans would take to him. He’s high energy, great effort. Perfect.”
Newcastle are yet to make a first-team signing in the January window and are still weighing up their options. Eddie Howe’s side are in a strong position as things stand, with a five-point lead over Spurs in fifth place.
When quizzed about their January business Howe told reporters (via Chronicle Live): “We’re working hard at the moment on staying in contact with the market and looking at players and doing a lot of work.
“We’re not imminently close to signing anybody. We’re not actively bidding for players at the moment.
“I think we’re looking at all positions. I know that’s not the answer you want but we are very much casting our eye over a number of positions because you know things can change so quickly.
“So there’s possibly one or two areas of the squad I’d look at and say we’re probably lighter in that area than others but as always I like to keep these things internal.”
Newcastle have invested into their squad wisely since the takeover and they are keen on not being drawn into any bidding wars with fellow Premier League clubs.
Given their high-pressing nature, midfield seems like an obvious position where they could look to strengthen in January.
Howe’s side are currently on a 14-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down soon.
If they manage to land a few of their targets in the January window then they would be in a strong position to finish in the top four come the end of the season.
