Antonio Conte says Chelsea were beaten by Liverpool to the signature of Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in world football on January 1 when his £75million move from Southampton to Liverpool was completed.
The centre-half had also been targeted by Manchester City over the past year, but Liverpool managed to win the race.
Conte admits that Chelsea were interested in purchasing the 26-year-old, but were simply beaten to the punch.
“This is football. This is life. For sure he was our target but as you know this is football.
“We can have a lot of targets but you must be able to reach those targets. The transfer market is not simple for any club.”
