Crouch wonders why 2019 finalists Tottenham bother qualifying for the Champions League
Peter Crouch has questioned why Tottenham even bother qualifying for the Champions League when the players don’t take it seriously.
Spurs crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night with Antonio Conte’s side only managing two shots on target as they failed to overcome a one-goal deficit from the first leg against AC Milan.
Cristian Romero’s red card 13 minutes from time made their job even harder as they searched for a late goal to send the match into extra time.
It was the end of a nightmare week for Tottenham which saw them dumped out the FA Cup by Championship side Sheffield United and beaten by Wolves in the Premier League.
The loss to Wolves leaves their top-four hopes hanging in the balance with Liverpool resurgent in recent weeks and now just three points behind with a game in hand.
But former Tottenham striker Crouch doesn’t see the point of them qualifying for the Champions League unless Spurs start performing in the big games.
Crouch said on BT Sport: “What’s the point of the top four if you’re going to perform like this in the Champions League? The fans want to see a trophy.
“So to rest players for that FA Cup game, it was for the league and then they lose the league game.”
It is going to be another trophyless year for Harry Kane and there are rumours flying around that he could leave Tottenham in the summer in his pursuit of silverware.
Crouch added: “How many transitional periods is Harry Kane going to have to wait for?
“It’s a short career, I don’t think anyone could begrudge Harry Kane if he wasn’t to move. AC Milan were comfortable tonight.”
Another former Tottenham player, Danny Rose, insists that “everybody has to be held accountable” for the current issues at Spurs.
“You say they have the best stadium… you can have the best house but if the furniture’s not the best inside then it’s irrelevant,” Rose on Sky Sports.
“Going at the hierarchy… I still look to go into the Spurs training ground so I’ll have to be careful what I say but I think that everybody has to be held accountable.”
On their recent signings, Rose added: “I heard something recently that the signings have not been great and it’s bizarre as I’m sure I said something like that six years ago and got fined two weeks’ wages but here we are.
“Everybody has to be held accountable and I think it will be interesting to see where they go from here until the end of the season.”
