Diogo Dalot looks set to remain at Manchester United despite ‘intense negotiations’ with Borussia Dortmund, as the Red Devils are unable to find a replacement this late in the window.

Dortmund were named as the main contenders for Dalot’s signature, with a loan deal with an option to buy mooted.

Bild (via Sport Witness) went as far as stating the 22-year-old’s move was ‘almost agreed’, but wasn’t ‘yet fixed’.

But Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger now says Dalot ‘will not’ join the Bundesliga side as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ‘can’t find’ a replacement.

Berger also states that Atletico Madrid ‘turned down’ a €21m bid from for Kieran Trippier, who will now ‘definitely stay in Spain’.

With United unable to land Trippier, they cannot afford to let Dalot leave for Dortmund, or anywhere else, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka the only other recognised right-back on the books at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has completed his move to United – a move that former striker Dimitar Berbatov claims makes them title contenders.

“It’s also not only fantastic news that he’s coming back to United but coming back to the Premier League – everyone in English football is going to be excited,” Berbatov said.

“To be honest, United should be targeting the title every year anyway. They should always be in the hunt, but now it seems everybody is satisfied with the transfers they have made and it’s even more credible that United could be up there and challenging for the title.”

United were quick to move for Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar was linked with a move to Manchester City and Berbatov has compared the situation to his own transfer saga when joining Old Trafford.

“What has happened in the last couple of days reminds me of my own situation when I was singing for United. City were talking with my agent and trying to get me to sign, but I was clear – No I’m going to United – was my response.

“I was going to be disappointed if he went to City of course, I was going to watch him and would still have liked to see him scoring goals, but now that he will be scoring goals for United it’s a whole different ball game.

“It doesn’t surprise me that he chose United in the end. We are all human and we are nostalgic so when he saw there was an opportunity to go back to where it started that would have been hugely tempting.”
