Matteo Darmian says he would have liked to see Andrea Pirlo play for Manchester United.

Pirlo is currently plying his trade in MLS with New York City FC, but the midfielder dominated Serie A for a number of seasons.

The 37-year-old won six top-flight titles in Italy with AC Milan and Juventus, as well as two Champions League trophies and numerous other silverware.

Darmian, who made his Italy debut in 2014 and enjoyed two years on the international scene with Pirlo, admits that he believes the midfielder would have been a success at Old Trafford.

“I think in the history of Italy there are a lot of players so it is difficult to pick one, but if I have to choose, I would probably choose Pirlo,” Darmian told the club’s official website when asked which countryman he would like to see join the club.

“I know him very well, I have played with him in the national team, so I know his qualities.

“He is a very good player and I think he would have been good for United.”
