David Luiz: I saw Mignolet was not in position

David Luiz says his goal for Chelsea against Liverpool came about because he was trying to “surprise” Simon Mignolet.

Luiz scored his first goal for the club since re-signing in the summer from Paris St Germain as the Blues battled to a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Although the Premier League leaders dropped two points at Anfield having led, their increased their gap at the top of the table to ten points with the draw.

Luiz’s goal, a quickly-taken free-kick, was cancelled out by a second-half Georginio Wijnaldum header, but the Brazilian was delighted to get off the mark again.

“It’s been a long time,” he said. “Sometimes you need to try the surprise. I saw he was not in position so I tried to surprise him,” he said to the club’s official website.

“Sometimes in the game you need to feel the game and see the opportunity. I was happy because I did well.”
