David de Gea has urged Manchester United “to be careful” over young duo Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga.
The pair are up for the United’s in house Player of the Month award for February after a productive spell for the Red Devils.
Sancho provided a brace of assists in the 4-2 win over Leeds, and scored against Middlesbrough and Southampton.
Elanga scored against Leeds and the crucial equaliser in their Champions League last-16 first leg against Atletico Madrid in the Wanda Metropolitano.
De Gea, who won the award in all of the three preceding months, says they both deserve to win but also implored the club to “give them some space” as they are “very young”.
“I’m happy for both [of them],” De Gea told United’s club website. “They are still very, very young.
“I think they are doing well and helping the team a lot but they are still young people, young players, and we have to be careful to give them some space. They are still very young.
“I don’t know who is going to win. They both deserve it so let the fans decide.”
After United’s draw with Atletico Madrid, manager Ralf Rangnick said Elanga’s teammates should be looking to him as a role model despite his tender age.
“He is playing as though it is a dream come true, it is a joy and fun to watch him play, I wish a few other players would take him as an example and as a role model,” said Rangnick.
“Anthony, in all the games that he has played so far, just shows that he’s playing with all the passion, all the fun and all the joy.
“He’s just enjoying himself on the pitch and he’s fully aware of his strengths, his assets, his weapons. He’s always trying to play and show those weapons. This is what he did again today.
“Not only the goal he scored, he had two or three great runs and whenever he did that you could all of a sudden see that Atletico had problems with this kind of approach. But we have to show that on other positions as well, so not only with Anthony Elanga or one or two other players.
“We just have to play like that on every single position and if we want to proceed to the quarter-finals in a couple of weeks at Old Trafford we have to play exactly like that.”
