De Gea targeted by European giant as Man Utd are told they have made goalkeeping downgrade

Bayern Munich are the latest club to target David De Gea as Manchester United have been told they have made a mistake by letting him go.

The Spanish shot-stopper spent 12 years at Old Trafford but finally called it quits this summer. Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove, the 32-year-old has come under fire of late.

Since leaving Man Utd, De Gea has been linked with plenty of clubs. A lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia has been mentioned as well as a potential return to La Liga.

According to Bild, Bayern Munich are the latest club to register an interest in the goalkeeper. With the club eyeing a Yann Sommer replacement, De Gea’s name has been mentioned.

The 32-year-old is seemingly in no rush to decide on his next club as he carefully considers what will be his best option.

Erik ten Hag took the decision to replace De Gea with Andre Onana. While plenty of fans are excited to see Onana in action, former United star Dwight Yorke isn’t convinced.

“I’ve said before that Man Utd need to be careful what they wish for with losing De Gea. For all the good De Gea has done for Man Utd, the way his career ended was really bad,” Yorke told FootballTransfers.

“I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt the club now they’ve bought Onana. Be careful what you wish for. In my opinion, Onana is not as good as De Gea and people need to watch him very carefully.

“I’ve seen Onana before, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish with how fast the game is and how often you are pressured. Onana tries to be an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper sometimes.

“I will be watching this guy very closely, and the people who have criticised De Gea and wanted him to leave will probably be the ones who will be calling him to come back. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen.”

It goes without saying that Onana is a completely different type of goalkeeper to De Gea. While the Spanish goalkeeper is best known for his shot-stopping, Onana is lauded for his sweeper-keeper antics.

Given Ten Hag’s style of play, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper does look like a more natural fit for his side. Although time will tell if he is a success at Old Trafford or not.
