Deadline Day ft. Odion Ighalo: Re-live it, re-love it

Date published: Friday 31st January 2020 7:17

You’ll find all the done deals right here. For everything else, read on…

23:47: Right, that’s about as much as we can take. Manchester United have not yet confirmed the deal to loan Odion Ighalo because, quite frankly, why would you?

With that said, it does make some sense. It’s still hilarious, mind.

Anyway, get some sleep. There will surely be some more random Football League loans overnight but it really isn’t worth it. Bedtime.

23:41: Huddersfield resign Jonas Lossl after he completely wasted 6 months of his life at Everton.

23:12: The Hammers have signed striker Jarrod Bowen from Hull City, who will now be cursed forever more – the poor sod.

23:00: WHHHAAADDUUUSHHHH. That was the transfer window slamming shut.

22:59: It may be their third or fourth choice, but Villa have got another striker – Borja Baston joins on a free transfer.

22:42: Conor Wickham gave Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge a thumbs up earlier… Oh, and he’s gone to Sheffield Wednesday on loan. Thanks for that Michael.

22:36: Something of a late doors transfer chain – which is nice. Leicester have got Ryan Bennett, so they don’t need Filip Benković, who’s gone to Bristol City on loan.

22:16: The Blades continue to win the transfer window as they sign £16m Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Panagiotis Retsos on loan, after sealing Dutch striker Richairo Zivkovic earlier today.

22:10: Leicester finally sign a Harry Maguire replacement. And it’s…. Ryan Bennett, on loan from Wolves.

22:08: It may have been a baffling week, but Man Utd agree a deal for Odion Ighalo on six-month loan. Medical etc. all done in China.

21:50: The loan fee for Odion Ighalo is said by Bleacher Report to be £4m. Manchester United are paying about that much to Sporting Lisbon every time Bruno Fernandes plays five games so that seems fair enough.

21:37: Christian Atsu is staying at Newcastle instead of joining Celtic on loan.

That sweet relief of 11pm cannot come soon enough.

21:13: Now then…

20:50: As is the tradition with any deadline day live blog ever published, I am contractually obliged to discuss my meal choices in football transfer jargon. So my exclusive is that I made a breakthrough in talks over having a takeaway earlier and promptly completed the swoop while Kaveh Solhekol shouted in my ear.

It really is just non-stop japery here.

20:41: All the usual culprits are saying Manchester United having agreed personal terms with Odion Ighalo, with only the structure of any possible loan deal – and the logistics of when the Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker can actually fly in from China – to sort.

But it seems like it’s actually happening. And it cannot be understated how mad that is.

20:28: A few quickfire updates here:

Wolves have signed Luke Matheson from Rochdale and loaned him back for the season.
Brighton have signed Tariq Lamptey from Chelsea. The Seagulls have also had a bid for Ipswich’s Armando Dobra rejected.
Maya Yoshida has completed his loan move to Sampdoria.

20:11: The Jarrod Bowen latest is that his representatives are themselves trying to negotiate a relegation release clause. Does no-one have faith in West Ham’s ability to stay up?

Answer: No.

The striker is apparently on a train to London now. This is one of the few deals that could actually go down to the wire.

19:54: Sheffield United are at least keeping this transfer window interesting. They have loaned Panagiotis Retsos from Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of the season, with Ravel Morrison bound for Middlesbrough on a similar deal. G’won, Blades.

19:40: There is talk on the streets, predictably hushed, that Chris Brunt might be leaving West Brom. The club’s longest-serving player would rather play actual games and his relationship with former Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill, in charge at Stoke, could see him head for the Potteries.

19:31: One move almost certain to go through is Aston Villa’s for Borja Baston. It has been engineered by sporting director Suso after interest in Olivier Giroud, Jay Rodriguez and Glenn Murray amounted to nothing. They have dropped down a division to secure another body, basically.

19:26: Sebastian Prodl has been released by Watford in one of those moves that you assumed had happened about two years ago.

19:19: Jarrod Bowen has reportedly completed his medical at West Ham, with only that dastardly relegation clause in his proposed contract preventing the move from going through.

19:11: Consider our slumber interrupted by news of Tottenham having a six-month loan bid for Odion Ighalo rejected by Shanghai Greenland Shenhua. They are putting up some real competition with Manchester United for crown of most baffling football club this month.

Sky add that Spurs are still ‘exploring their options’ in terms of a striker signing, but it seems unlikely at this stage.

18:31: Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian has offered us some crucial insight into what is holding up West Ham’s move for Jarrod Bowen.

The Hull striker is apparently reluctant to agree to a clause that would half his wages if the Hammers are relegated. And you can kind of see his point.

18:23: You could offer to slap me in the face and give me £5 and I’d shake your hand and thank you for the opportunity to leave Wigan for Milan. Yet the talk is that full-back Antonee Robinson cannot agree personal terms, with further medical tests and a looming 8pm Italian deadline meaning that the proposed deal has been abandoned. Poor bastard.

18:11: Here’s a thing. John Percy, who drops nothing but truth bombs, says Aston Villa are on the brink of signing Borja Baston from Swansea on ‘a short-term deal’.

You might remember him as the fella who didn’t do too well in the Premier League the last time he was here…

18:04: Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund’s kinship has been reinforced with Emre Can’s move to the Westfalenstadion. Jurgen Klopp will be delighted for his former midfielder, who had started to gather dust at Juventus.

17:50: Over to Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports for the latest from Vicarage Road.

‘Looks like #watford have given up in their attempts to sign #bcfc defender Kristian Pedersen.’

Is it 11pm yet?

17:43: Nico Gaitan is on the move! To Manchester United? No. Lille. Still, it’s something.

17:22: This just in: West Ham are being West Ham.

17:06: A couple of updates for those of you who are soldiering on:

Angelino has completed that aforementioned move to Leipzig. Benjamin Mendy’s knee fell off as he was in the process of saying goodbye.

And Brighton have recalled Jurgen Locadia on loan, reportedly so they can send him straight back out to FC Cincinatti.

More as we get it.

16:46: In the absence of Maya Yoshida updates there is absolutely nothing happening. Jarrod Bowen might move. Tottenham might sign a striker. Sky Sports might collapse in on itself.

Oh, here’s something: Manchester United tried to sign Josh King on loan from Bournemouth because they’ve absolutely lost it.

16:26: The dog is asleep and has just guffed. It smells like this deadline day.

16:19: Connor Wickham. Sheffield Wednesday. Loan.

You’re welcome.

16:14: Perhaps the biggest story on transfer deadline day has concerned poor Jarrod Bowen. The fella has had enough of Hull – who can blame him? – but his exit routes all seem to be blocked.

Crystal Palace want him but The Athletic say their offer was for a loan with a view to buying him in the summer. West Ham have made a bid for a permanent move but discussions over his personal terms continue. And the forward himself would rather join Newcastle, who are not interested. Awkward.

On the subject of Palace, The Guardian say that their move for West Brom full-back Nathan Ferguson has been delayed due to doubts over his fitness. Roy won’t be happy.

16:05: German newspaper Bild claim that RB Leipzig are in advanced negotiations with Manchester City over signing Angelino. They have presumably never seen him play.

It will be a loan until the end of the season, apparently with no purchase clause in the summer.

Not entirely sure how that serves City’s interests, with their left-back position still blighted by injury. Then again, he isn’t great.

16:03: And you thought this deadline day was going to pass without anything of note happening. Think again: Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano say Maya Yoshida is headed to Sampdoria. And we’d trust them with our lives when it comes to Italian transfer news.

15:50: Ki Sung-yueng has been allowed to leave Newcastle United for pastures new.

On his exit by mutual consent, he said: “I never forget the time with Newcastle fans. It is a pity that I could not do better but sometimes in football, there are things I could not overcome.”

15:48: Hull are preparing for Jarrod Bowen’s exit…

15:42: Double deal for the Boro. Can they finally get the best out of Ravel Morrison?

15:38: Gareth Bale has been left of Real Madrid’s squad for tomorrow’s derby. Spurs doing bits? Almost definitely a coincidence…

15:30: This is what you get for bagging at Old Trafford. Rochdale youngster Luke Matheson looks to be on his way to the Premier League with Wolves.

15:19: Quoting £50million will do that. Less than eight hours to find a striker, Ed…

15:17: Other reports suggest Bowen is asking for £60,000 a week at West Ham

15:13: What happened to Man Utd’s interest in Jude Bellingham? Earlier in the window, when they were reluctant to pay the going rate for Bruno Fernandes, it was widely reported they were willing to pay £25-30million for the Birmingham teenager.

The Evening Standard says United haven’t got cold feet and they remain very keen to sign the 16-year-old in the summer. But right now, they are too busy scrambling around for a striker.

15:08: Some reports doing the rounds that Bournemouth have quoted Man Utd £50million for Josh King.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get…

15:00: Transfer window? Ki Sung-Yeung moves when he likes…

14: 50: Edinson Cavani is going nowhere. Literally and metaphorically.

PSG have confirmed the Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Man Utd target will stay until his contract expires in the summer.

14: 35: Man Utd’s move for Josh King seems dependent on Bournemouth getting in a replacement. It was thought that might be Jarrod Bowen but David Moyes is ruining United’s day again…

14:25: A very Arsenal update. Their short-term loan signing is injured.

14:18: Tenth time lucky for Ravel…

14:15: Crystal Palace are having a beast. Jarrod Bowen and Yannick Carrasco buggered off elsewhere, while one signing they managed to agree on has fluffed his medical.

Apparently, a knee problem was detected when West Brom’s Nathan Ferguson dropped his trousers and coughed for the Palace doctor. That doesn’t mean the deal is dead, but the Eagles are reassessing.

14:10: Just had some leftover shepherds pie for lunch. That was nice.

14:05: This is what it has come to…

13:56: Lampard: “No ins means no outs.” So that’s Chelsea done, then. Come on, Deadline Day. Be better.

13:51: SSN now interviewing Pep Guardiola to get him to confirm for the 873rd time since December that Manchester City will not be signing anyone in this transfer window. OR WILL THEY? (No.)

13:49: Olivier Giroud is staying at Chelsea. Tottenham’s list of possible striker signings thinning out in the last hour. We also have to assume that Chelsea have failed to get in whoever they hoped to get in today. Mertens, presumably. But that’s all a bit 2+2=random number from us there.

13:47: It’s all gone very quiet. Too quiet. Must be something massive happening. Or not.

13:18: This should be the end of one major Deadline Day thread. Real Sociedad rule out any departure today for Willian Jose. Spurs and United were both heavily linked.

13:02: Sheffield United sign Richairo Zivkovic. Loan with an option.

13:00: Add Teemu Pukki and Dries Mertens to the list of strikers Manchester United have been linked with. By my count, that’s on top of Odion Ighalo, Salomon Rondon, Edinson Cavani, Vedat Muriqi, Danny Ings, Adolfo Gaich and Josh King. For sanity, I’m only counting links from the last 24 hours.

12:52: Talking about Bergwijn as a long-term project, but says he will be in the squad to face Manchester City on Sunday.

12:51: Jose on SSN now…

“In a funny way, we’ve signed Hugo Lloris and Japhet Tanganga.” LIKE A NEW SIGNING KLAXON!

12:40: The mystery man Newcastle agreed a club-record fee for last week before the deal broke down was apparently Boubakary Soumare. Been linked with Manchester United as well because he is a footballer that exists.

12:38: Anyway. That concludes RedknappWatch. You’ve not missed much elsewhere.

12:36: Redknapp now claims he’ll be following all the day’s activity on Sky Sports News. This, remember, despite the fact he had literally no idea about the Josh King story until told about it live on air. Hmm.

12:36: Redders Sr. not expecting any arrivals at Chelsea. “Frank’s pretty happy with his squad.” Which would presumably leave Giroud stuck where he is anyway.

12:33: Spurs would be a good move for Giroud, says Harry. He then actually talks quite interestingly for a bit about styles, which is not what we’re interested in. He then calls Giroud a “top player” and we’re back in the room. Also very impressed with Jarrod Bowen and reckons West Ham have got a great move there if they can get it over the line.

12:32: Harry’s back! They’ve just told him about Josh King’s potential move to Manchester United. It is quite literally the first Harry has heard of it.

12:30: I can do literally nothing now until they get Harry back on the line. Cancel everything. Including Brexit.

12:26: He wasn’t even leaning out of a car window.

12:25: And now the line has cut out. Great segment.

12:24: “Harry, why’s it been so quiet?” “I don’t know.” Thanks, Harry.

12:23: HARRY REDKNAPP ON SKY SPORTS NEWS

12:16: Celtic will not, repeat not, be re-signing Victor Wanyama today it says on the Sky Sports News yellow ticker of dreams. That said, let’s not make a habit of listing all the transfers that won’t happen today because that will be time-consuming.

12:12: Josh King would very much like to join Manchester United please.

11:55: Remember the school kid who scored against Man Utd for Rochdale back in September? It seems he could be Premier League bound.

Wolves apparently have an offer in for Luke Matheson which involves loaning him back to Rochdale for the rest of the season.

11:49: Still plenty of chat around Gareth Bale and Spurs, which is a bit weird because everyone says it won’t happen. So why are we still talking about it?

“One word: crap.” was how Bale’s agent described the links when it was put to him by the Daily Mail earlier.

11:44: From one move that probably will happen, to another that almost certainly won’t…

ORRRNNNSSSTTTEEEEEIIIIINNN says Chelsea have given up their pursuit of a new striker and will instead make Olivier Giroud sit and watch for the rest of the season.

“Would take something extraordinary to change the situation,” says The Athletic’s oracle.

11:25: This is going to happen, isn’t it?

Bournemouth are apparently scouring the continent for last-minute replacements for King, who is probably buzzing off his nut.

11:17: Palace wanted Jarrod Bowen – he’s probably off to West Ham. They wanted Yannick Carrasco – he’s probably going back to Atletico on loan.

Now it seems the increasingly-desperate Eagles have got Bournemouth’s Jordon Ibe in their sights. Ibe has played more Premier League football this season than Bowen and Carrasco, but only by 47 minutes. And not since August.

11:10: And still, Olivier Giroud sits, smoulders and waits for Chelsea to find a striker before he can move on with his life.

If the Blues do the business then reports suggest Inter Milan are back in for him. Lazio are also in London hoping to take Giroud back to Rome with them, while Spurs want to provide the Frenchman with the London hat-trick.

No sign of Chelsea getting a striker in, though…

11:05: Could you do a job?

11:00: All the deets on Arsenal signing Southampton’s right-back.

10:55: Danny Ings was perhaps the only striker not have been linked with Man Utd this month. Mercifully, that’s been put right…

10:50: Interesting, this. A loan move with the option of a permanent deal in the summer, apparently…

10:40: It was said earlier how coronavirus had denied West Ham the chance to re-sign Marko Arnautovic, and it seems the lurgy has put paid to Odion Ighalo’s hopes of joining Man Utd.

10:35: Steve Bruce has admitted Newcastle agreed a club-record deal for a midfielder last week but he didn’t reveal who.

Numerous sources have pinpointed Lille’s Boboukary Soumare as that mystery man. Apparently, he didn’t fancy Newcastle, which is understandable given he’s been linked with most of Europe’s heavy-hitters.

10:30: ARSENAL HAVE DONE A TRANSFER.

The Saints defender joins on loan until the end of the season.

10:24: Solskjaer has also been speaking about potential incomings.

“I don’t think we’ll do any more business. I’m happy with the ones we’ve got.”

Righto. Oh, you’re not done…

“Sometimes I say something here and something else happens. Sometimes the player gets a different message so I don’t want to make the speculation grow.”

Josh King’s balls are a tingling…

10:20: Angel Gomes won’t be going anywhere today other than Norwich. The Man Utd winger is out of contract at the end of the season but Solskjaer says he’ll be going with James Garner and the other stiffs for an Under-23 game at Carrow Road tonight.

10:10: Eddie Howe was asked about Josh King and Man Utd. His answer was less than convincing.

“It is not my call. That is between the chief executive and the owner. I know what Man United means to Josh.”

Basically, if United up their offer, he’ll be off.

10:01: Manchester United have made contract with San Lorenzo over a possible loan move for Adolfo Gaich, according to reports.

09:56: On Sky Sports News they’re now playing about with some Instagram thing that tells you who you’d sign for if you were a professional footballer who was joining a new club on Deadline Day rather than a Sky Sports News haircut in a Next suit. I never thought I’d say this, but can we hear more from Danny Mills please?

09:53: SSN are very confident that Gareth Bale won’t join Spurs today. As are we all.

09:45: It’s a Deadline Day-themed morning Mailbox. Why aren’t Manchester United trying to sign Olivier Giroud?

09:19: I didn’t dream it! That’s a relief. The mind plays tricks.

09:16: It was widely assumed that Emre Can was off to Borussia Dortmund today, but could Spurs or Arsenal stage a LATE HIJACK of that deal? Almost certainly not tbh, but have a read of this anyway please and thank you.

09:12: Did I dream that Giroud yellow ticker? Very, very early in proceedings for the hallucinations to start. Worrying times.

09:07: Right on cue, SSN bring out the big yellow ticker for TOTTENHAM AGREE FEE FOR OLIVIER GIROUD and then it IMMEDIATELY DISAPPEARS AGAIN. Intrigue!

09:05: Steve Bruce tells talkSPORT or TALKsport or tAlKsPoRt or however you’re supposed to write it that Newcastle have failed in a bid to bring in Olivier Giroud. Is he really, actually going to give it the Full Gallas and join Spurs?

09:04: Nothing expected at Liverpool today, according to SSN. Frankly be taking the piss if there was.

08:52: “You’re just waiting for one big transfer to go through, and then there’ll be a domino effect.” DRINK.

08:45: The latest on Willian Jose is here. Manchester United have turned their noses up at a possible loan, but Spurs are still working on a pricey permanent move for the Real Sociedad striker.

08:28: “Wigan defender Antonee Robinson travelling to AC Milan for medical ahead of £10m move” is a classic slice of SSN yellow ticker action.

08:27: Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani reckon Man United have got a good one in Bruno Fernandes. They’ve been chatting to Rio Ferdinand.

08:24: Danny Mills and Clinton Morrison are arguing about Jack Grealish. I’m putting Fireman Sam on.

08:13: Right. What else is in the papers then. Let’s hold our nose and dive in…

  • Nemanja Matic has turned down offers to leave Manchester United and will sign a new contract, if they like.
  • Bruno Fernandes in at Manchester United means Paul Pogba out, The Sun guesses.
  • Ravel Morrison could get the latest chance to revive his career at Middlesbrough.
  • There could be a good old-fashioned Deadline Day scramble for Victor Wanyama, according to the Mail. £8m should do the trick for someone.

08:11: Very, very early in the day, Sky Sports News have already decided that the actual rumours and news doing the rounds are too boring so Clinton Morrison has entirely concocted in his own mind the idea of Spurs or Manchester United signing Raul Jimenez from Wolves.

08:08: The life of a Deadline Day blogger is a glamorous one. My two-year-old has just walked in and asked with entirely correct levels of derision “Daddy, what are you doing?” The answer did not impress him. Having then been told that no, he couldn’t turn Sky Sports News over to Fireman Sam, he simply sighed and walked off. “I’m going for a poo.”

More as we get it.

08:06: First “Unless something massive and unexpected develops then they’re telling us business is finished here” of the day comes from Newcastle. We’ll still be back there for an update 283 times before the end of the day.

08:05: Danny Mills starts as he means to go on on the Sky Sports News Deadline Day sofa. Airily dismisses talk of Manchester United signing Joshua King. “This is Manchester United.” He’s right, it is.

07:50: Matty Longstaff’s agent seems to have been a busy boy.

The Newcastle midfielder is struggling to agree a new contract with the Magpies so The Times have been fed news of interest from Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Longstaff is still on terms of less than a grand a week. Poor kid.

07:45: ORRRNNNSSSTEREEEEEIIIIIINNNN is in the house. And he’s brought news of Jarrod Bowen.

The Athletic says the Hull winger is due to have a medical at West Ham this lunchtime after a £23million deal was agreed.

The Hammers will reportedly pay £14million up front with another £8million to follow in add-ons.

07:35: Lest we forget.

07:25: West Ham really are trying to get the old band back together.

After re-appointing David Moyes, the Hammers are also keen to bring Marko Arnautovic back from China. However, the Mirror reckons their plan has been foiled by the grounding of flights in China due to coronavirus.

It would hardly be the first virus in the West Ham dressing room.

Moyes, apparently, wants a striker, a midfielder and a right-back today.

07:20: The Times reckons Tottenham’s hopes of getting Willian Jose on the cheap are fading fast. Apparently the striker could cost as much as £31million because Real Sociedad would have to forward 30 per cent of whatever fee they receive to third-party owners.

Spurs will also have to up their £23million offer for Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, according to the Daily Star.

Morning, Daniel Levy.

07:15: Something should happen today with Jarrod Bowen. It seems news of a deal between Palace and Hull was used to smoke out the winger’s other suitors and West Ham have taken the bait. Reports suggest the Hammers have matched Palace’s £16million offer, while Newcastle are content to sit and watch the London rivals slug it out.

07:08: Half of the big six are looking for a centre-forward but options are sparse. It emerged late last night that Man Utd failed in a late bid to bring Joshua King back to Old Trafford from Bournemouth with Sky Sports this morning are rubbishing links between the Red Devils and Willian Jose.

Tottenham, though, could sign the Real Sociedad striker if they can arrange a loan deal. At Chelsea, they could capitalise on Edinson Cavani’s failed move to Atletico. If Frank Lampard gets his forward, then Olivier Giroud can leave, with Lazio the latest club to be linked, though Spurs are also said to be monitoring the France striker’s situation.

07:05: What do we expect today? Frankly, not a lot. Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham all want a striker; Arsenal could look to being in a defender; West Ham might sh*t the bed completely; while five clubs could make their first signings of the window on the very last day.

07:00: Welcome to January deadline day 2020. Strap in for the rollercoaster of bullsh*t and bang average reserve-team players getting last-minute loan moves…

The deadline arrives at 11pm this evening. Until then, we’ll be here to guide you through another thrilling underwhelming conclusion to the transfer window.
